From The End of the World to Mexico in numbers
To be honest, when it comes to any numbers, I enjoyed everything at let’s say natural and spontaneous levels. I haven’t pushed things much to spend extra money or to travel extra miles but I also haven’t pushed myself trying to save few bucks by not doing what I wanted. I just did whatever it felt like at the time. Except for some of the very expensive activities/tours, I had no limits, no number-wise or passport stamps-collecting goals, nor I was looking after every penny.
When it comes to the levels of comfort it was pretty much the same story. Most of the time I’ve slept in private accommodations and except the very expensive regions, such as Patagonia, Chile and Uruguay, I’ve treated myself to meals in local restaurants. I guess I could have done the whole trip for less money if I really wanted to but I didn’t want money to dictate the style during one of the best trips of my life, innit?))
I mean – why would I – when I was blessed to visit such a gorgeous locations like Valparaíso, Patagonia, Buenos Aires, Cabo Polonio, Iguazú Falls, Uyuni Salt Flats, Lake Titicaca, Rincón del Mar, Corn Islans or Lake Atitlán?
My budget
Bellow, you can see let’s say 95% accurate “accounting”, I’ve created with the help of a Spendee app. This is all exclusive of any expenses spent before the trip, such as boots, various trekking gear and so on. FYI, some categories might appear boosted by items that technically should have been in a different category if I was an uptight accountant. I’m talking about things like for example tips being included in food and drinks categories, instead of gifts or something like that.
It appears that – if you don’t mind sleeping in dormitories and if you don’t have expensive hobbies, such as scuba diving or drinking and if you don’t forget your shampoo in every second hotel, your nearly 8 months long trip from Ushuaia to Yucatán could be doable for about €10k. You would however have to be creative to achieve that because you will also have to try to avoid the fees for guides and tours, whenever it’s possible.
I think that if I didn’t injure my knee, I believe that my drinks budget would be significantly lower while the tourism budget would rise unequally. Trust me, although alcohol could be a budget breaker, in Latin Americas, it is far easier to spend $50 on a day tour than in the bar 😉
Please do not hesitate to ask me anything in case you have decided to go for it. I’ll be glad to help you, whether it will be with the $50 a night in a bar or with any possible advice regarding your trip to this beautiful part of the World 😉
